Out of the Wings presents its fourth annual festival, exploring untapped theatre from the Spanish and Portuguese-speaking world.
In 2019, we are delighted to be taking our work to a new venue, the Omnibus Theatre, London. Over five days, a series of staged readings bring to life new English translations of works by playwrights from six countries, alongside workshops, talks and events, in celebration of theatre in translation.
Save the dates and stay tuned!
Tue 30 July:  CASSANDRA, SANDRA by Gabriela Aguilera,
translated by William Gregory
When his mother’s death forces Alex reluctantly back home to Chile, all he wants is to clear out her flat and leave.  But when the checkout lady from the supermarket across the street appears uninvited at his door, he is forced to confront the world he thought he’d left behind.
Wed 31 July:  FERNANDO AND HIS GRANDMOTHER by Armando Nascimento Rosa,
translated by Susannah Finzi
In a dance across the generations, the legendary Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa duets with his irrepressible grandmother Dionísia Seabra.  Spanning almost a century, their meetings continue despite illness, distance, and even death.  Come what may, some bonds refuse to be broken.

Thu 01 August:  HER OPEN EYES by Raquel Diana,
translated by Sophie Stevens
High above the city, a woman balances on a tightrope, listening for the music that helps her to focus and not to fall.  The award-winning Uruguayan playwright returns to Out of the Wings with a lyrical meditation on female resilience, experience and creativity.
Fri 02 August:  BAD JOKE by Jordi Casanovas,
translated by Tim Gutteridge
In a biting satire from one of Catalonia’s most prolific and successful contemporary playwrights, two old friends test the limits of comedy in a moment of nostalgic bravado.  But all too soon their gamble runs out of control.  In pushing the boundaries of humour, do we risk plummeting over the edge?
Sat 03 August:  FREDDIE by Abilio Estévez, translated by Kate Eaton, and scenes from COMPLEMENTO by Rafael Guizado, translated by Gigi Guizado
In our closing double-bill, obsession and fantasy meets a Tartuffe with a twist.  From Cuba, a fan fixates on a legendary singer almost to the point of destruction, while a mischievous interloper brings sparkle to a conservative family in a comedy from the golden age of Colombian radio drama.
Out of the Wings began life as a research project, leading to a unique archive of plays from Spain and Spanish America: outofthewings.org. In recent years we have grown to include work from Portuguese-speaking writers, and have developed into a collective of theatre artists, researchers, producers and other colleagues, all with the shared goal of showcasing and exploring international theatre.
We’re busy all year round! Out of the Wings meets every month to read and discuss new translations of Spanish- or Portuguese-language plays. We welcome new members and love discovering new work. To learn more, email info@outofthewings.org.
