November with Out of the Wings

Out of the Wings is keeping busy and has lots of events lined up for November. We hope that you will join us for them and keep our community growing.

Save the date: Bonus meet-and-read with ScriptXtra, November 19: La Florida

We’re delighted to partner up with ScriptXtra, a new project at the University of East Anglia (UEA), for a bonus mid-month meet-and-read at 1930GMT on November 19.  We will be reading LA FLORIDA by Víctor Sánchez Rodríguez, translated by our member William Gregory.  This joint event coincides with William being a Translator in Residence at the British Centre for Literary Translation, and with our member Sophie Stevens also having joined UEA recently as a Leverhulme Fellow in the School of Literature, Drama and Creative Writing.

Our 2017 festival saw the premiere of Víctor’s earlier play, CUZCO, which went on to be produced at Theatre503 in London in 2019.  In his follow-up to that tale of a voyage to the Andes under strain, LA FLORIDA is a Valencia-set noir inspired by California hardboilers, and was translated by William during a residency at the Arniches Theatre, Alicante.  For more about the play, click here; meanwhile, save the date and look out for the Zoom link in our future newsletters (click here to sign up to our mailing list to ensure you receive them).

The Greek Trilogy of Luis Alfaro

Join us for a special celebration of the publication of The Greek Trilogy of Luis Alfaro (Methuen Drama 2020), edited by Rosa Andújar. The book brings together for the first time the three ‘Greek’ plays of Luis Alfaro, MacArthur Genius Award-winning Chicanx playwright and performance artist. ElectricidadOedipus El Rey, and Mojada (based respectively on Sophocles’ Electra and Oedipus Rex, and Euripides’ Medea) refashion ancient drama in order to give voice to the experiences of the Chicanx and wider Latinx communities.

This online event will feature the performance of selected scenes from Electricidad and Mojada by Pancho Díaz, Pepa Duarte Soldevilla, Alvaro Flores, and Gigi Guizado, under the direction of Almiro Andrade.

Special guests Professors Jorge Huerta and Oliver Taplin will offer brief commentary on the scenes, followed by general discussion and Q&A led by Professor Catherine Boyle and Dr Rosa Andújar.

The event is free of charge, please sign up via the following link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-greek-trilogy-of-luis-alfaro-book-launch-tickets-127431510077
