A One-day Forum for Theatre Translation Practitioners and Researchers

As part of the 2018 Out of the Wings Festival, Out of the Wings is coming together with the Language Acts and Worldmaking project, and Goldsmiths, University of London to offer a one-day discussion forum aimed at practitioners of theatre and theatre translation and academic researchers working on theatre and translation studies. Taking place on the closing day of the Out of the Wings Festival, 2-6 July 2018, the forum will create a space for dialogue around the play readings from Latin America, Portugal, and Spain, presented in English translation as part of the festival. This is an opportunity to engage creatively with ideas on staging, teaching and researching translated theatre.

Our aim is to bring together practitioners and researchers – actors, directors, producers, literary managers, commissioning editors, dramaturges, writers, translators, research students, theatre translation trainers, theatre translation lecturers and academics – to discuss a range of questions at the nexus of theatre translation research, translator training, and theatre practice. How do we put the results of theatre translation research into practice on stage? What expertise in training, writing, translation, surtitling, consultancy, and dramaturgical support can university-based researchers offer theatre practitioners, companies and festivals interested in staging translated theatre? What does it mean to bring theatre translation research into a university classroom or theatre workshop setting? Can insights gained from theatre translation pedagogy inform the domain of practice?

Animated by these questions, panels of presenters and round table discussions will focus on broad themes of advocacy and translation, and theatre translation pedagogy. Informal networking sessions will support interaction between participants and presenters and encourage the development of new partnerships, and a facilitated discussion workshop on commissioning theatre translation services will focus on model contracts for theatre translations and surtitling; rates for commissioning, staging and broadcasting translations and surtitles; and codes of practice for theatre translators and surtitlers.

We invite short proposals (no more than 200 words) for ten-minute provocations or twenty-minute presentations engaging with any (or all!) of the topic areas below. These need not be in Spanish or Portuguese.

• Debating advocacy in/and translation

• ‘Pitching’ translated plays to publishers/producers, or defending
a particular interpretation or approach to translation

• Reading freshness into well-known works

• Practice-led and research-led teaching in translation

• Collaborative translation processes and projects
