Out of the Wings is a collective of theatre-makers, translators and researchers dedicated to exploring and promoting theatre in translation to the wider English-speaking world. Between 23rd and 27th February 2021 we will hold a week-long ‘Winter Warmer’ of events celebrating theatre in translation, hosted online by the Omnibus Theatre.
We are inviting applications for the opening event of the week, to take place on the evening of February 23: our first-ever Emerging Theatre Translators Scratch Night. A selection of extracts of plays translated by early-career or first-time theatre translators will be performed by a company of actors, followed by a discussion of next steps, training opportunities and paths to performance for anyone interested in the world of theatre translation.
Call for Submissions
We invite translators to submit short extracts for performance at this event. Submissions are invited until February 5 and successful candidates will be informed by February 15.
–We seek extracts not exceeding 10 minutes; shorter extracts are welcome.
–Translations are welcome from anywhere in the world, translated into English.
–The play may be from any period, and translated from any language.
–Extracts should be performable by a maximum of six actors. If the number of characters exceeds six, please indicate which characters can be doubled-up.
–The call-out is open to any translators who have not previously had a full-length translation of a play either publicly performed or published, including online.
–Translations by women or by translators from under-represented backgrounds are particularly encouraged.
–Translators should complete the ‘Scratch Night Play Template’ (link here) and include this as the first page of their submission, to provide us with information about the play and the author. In the event the extract is selected, the translator will use this to introduce the extract during the scratch event.
–Before submitting a translation for consideration, the translator should ensure they have the permission of the writer, their estate or their representatives as appropriate and that all parties are aware of the terms of this call-out.
–This is an unpaid opportunity; the event will be fully online, ticketed but free to attend for all.
Submissions, and any questions or queries, should be sent to email@example.com
