CEREMONIAS
PANDÉMICAS
(Pandemic Ceremonies)
Ceremonias Pandémicas was a response to the impossibility of gathering due to COVID-19. Curated by Mary Ann Vargas and played by an international group of actors and performers,
Ceremonias consists of three pre-recorded monologues written by Cuban playwright Abilio Estévez, in translations by Kate Eaton.
Sometimes read, sometimes spoken directly to the camera, the pieces are imaginative explorations of the experience of isolation and the creative resilience to communicate against all odds.
SANTA
CECILIA
This city of yours, of columns and enchantment, is submerged… And there are deaths, epidemics of nostalgia, sadness…I am under the sea. They abandoned me. One by one I saw them leave. That is the price you pay for death when you are over one hundred years old: to see the sea submerging you and the world left in ruins.

FREDDIE
Do you know what a window is? The means of escape for the imprisoned. The window ruptures the wall, it makes it vulnerable. Having a window is a smart move in difficult moments. It’s as if the world entered into you and you entered into the world!

TINY MAN IN A BOTTLE
‘I am a tiny man who lives in a bottle. The worst thing is boredom. Living in a bottle is more deadly than living in an empty city, where there’s nothing to do and people go to bed early to dream that they’re going to the cinema or the theatre….’
